The French Alpes-Maritimes feel uniquely different, as they are influenced by a Mediterranean climate which rear up from behind the Cote d'Azur. For cyclists they offer the pleasure and pain associated with some of the highest and longest paved passes in Europe, mountain passes with lunar landscapes and simply amazing vistas.

We start and finish this tour on the beautiful Cote d'Azur, Nice is the holiday mecca for the rich and famous with its glorious curved Bay of the Angels, fringed by the famous Promenade des Anglais. You could spend hours just wandering along the streets of this cosmopolitan heaven.

Our base for the first two nights is along the coast near ‘film famous’ Cannes. We start with a beautiful ride along the rolling coast to St Raphaël, followed by a trip up into the hinterland to see the town of Grasse, the gorges around Le Bar-sur-Loup and the ancient hill top village of Gourdon.

On Day 3 the Col d’Allos is our first major objective as we enter the Alps Maritimes, a range of mountains often used by the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France; we head to the town of Barcelonnette which was founded in 1231 and has a rich medieval history. It also offers a different cultural experience as the town was heavily influenced by French emigrants returning from Mexico in the late 1800’s; having made their fortunes the people built large houses and villas of colonial style better known as ‘maisons mexicaines’, to display their wealth. From Barcelonnette we ride the highest paved pass in Europe, the Col del la Bonette and Cime de la Bonette, at 2,808m it tops better known giants such as the Stelvio at 2,757m and the Galibier at 2,642m.

It’s then time to climb over the border into Italy via another col made famous by the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France, the Col Agnel, which at 2,744m is the fourth highest paved pass in Europe. In the ancient Italian town of Saluzzo we enjoy accommodation in a 14th century convent and monastery, the stately rooms and functional areas are decorated with fresco from the 15th century. Its feels like your walking back in time! Saluzzo and Cuneo offer a rest day chance to recover and explore these history laden towns, wondering through the shops in the backstreets and having coffee in piazza’s at your leisure.

The Po valley ride is always a highlight and we take a hillside route to exploring the capital of Piemonte, Cuneo. Riding along the Italian coast allows us to experience the climax to Milan – Sanremo as we traverse the Cipressa and Poggio down to Sanremo for coffee on the Via Roma. Our final day highlight takes us up local favourites, the Col d’Eze and the Col de la Madone. These Col’s are often used in Paris – Nice and have been made famous by modern day cyclists that lived in this area, such as Rominger, Armstrong and now our own Richie Port who currently holds the unofficial record for the Col de la Madone.

This tour is a mix of high mountains balanced with the rich cultural experiences gained from ancient towns and of course the French and Italian Riviera.
